You think Friday the 13th is just a superstition? Well, looking at the numbers throughout history, one may think it’s too much of a coincidence for all these to have the number 13 in common.  

 

The Birth of Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock, the most famous horror filmmaker to have ever lived even to this very day, was born on August 13, 1899. Quite an appropriate day, what say Mr Hitchcock?

 

1970 Bhola Cyclone

On Friday, November 13, 1970, A 150-mph tropical cyclone hits the densely populated Ganges Delta of Chittagong, Bangladesh, killing an estimated 500,000 people in one night. This is regarded as the 20th century’s worst natural disaster.

 

1972 Andes Flight Disaster

On Friday, October 13, 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force flight carrying a rugby team of 45 passengers from Uruguay to Chile crashed in the Andes. Twelve passengers died in the crash, more were killed by the cold weather of the Andes and later eight additional people were killed in an avalanche. Sixteen survivors were rescued after two months of search.

 

Friday the 13th Virus

On January 13, 1989, the "Friday the 13th" virus infected hundreds of IBM computers throughout the United Kingdom. At a time when computer viruses were a relatively new thing, having programs and files deleted from your computer involuntarily was quite scary.

 

Nazis Bomb Buckingham Palace

On Friday, September 13, 1940, Nazi Germany bombed Buckingham Palace. The Queen and the King were sipping tea when this happened. The palace chapel was completely destroyed and the kingdom shaken!

 

The Catalina Affair

On Friday, June 13, 1952, a Swedish military plane disappeared over international water in the Baltic Sea. To this day no one knows what happened to the plane that disappeared, but the subsequent planes sent out to the Baltic to search for it were attacked by the Soviets causing "the Catalina affair" to occur. Maybe you should think twice about flying on the Friday, the 13th!

 

Black Sabbath releases their debut album

On Friday the 13th of February 1970, the Black Sabbath band, which is a darker band than any heavy metal banks, released their debut. The release of such a dark album on such a dark day by these metal legends, who claim Satan himself probably commanded the band, was definitely a premeditated move.

Tupac Shakur's Death

Rapper and west coast legend Tupac Shakur was famously shot in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. He was then rushed to the hospital and didn't actually pass until six days later on Friday the 13th!

 

Tennessee Law Banning The Teaching of Evolution

The state of Tennessee passed the Butler Act on Friday, March 13, 1925, a law which banned the state's public school teachers from accepting evolution as man's origins. Scary!

 

Fidel Castro's Birth

Fidel Castro, another August 13 born (1926) and born on a Friday, became the dictator of a small communist island of Cuba off the coast on the United States, striking fear into the hearts of Americans throughout the Cold War. To date, many Americans are still afraid of him. Who knows how much longer it will be until Cuba and the US can resume normal relations.

 

13-year-old British boy hit by lightening on August 13, at 13:13

Last, but the most sinister of them all, on Friday, August 13, 2010, a 13-year-old boy in Suffolk, UK was struck by lightening at 1:13 pm, which in the UK is actually called 13:13. The boy was struck at Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival, and it was only while the ambulance team was treating him that they noticed the time - 1.13 pm.  The lad was among 150,000 people at an airshow when the bolt hit. He was treated for burns to his shoulder. He lived.
